A compelling collection of self-portraits from throughout recorded history, revised to include captivating contemporary works. The challenge of interpreting and recreating their own likenesses has proven irresistible to artists throughout the ages. Originally published more than 80 years ago and last revised in 2000, this wholly new edition for 2018 presents a selection of powerfully evocative works by many of the world's greatest artists - from Durer and Rembrandt to Marina Abramović, David Hockney, and Cindy Sherman - working in painting, photography, sculpture, and performance. Flowing in a chronological sequence, with interspersed artist quotes, it features essays by Julian Bell and Liz Rideal. This is both a useful resource and a thoughtful celebration of a much-loved art form.

Judith Scott's story has become widely known through several documentary films: born with Down syndrome, and institutionalized for thirty years, before moving to the Bay Area to be near her twin sister, Scott had long-hidden artistic sensibilities that were first discovered at the visionary Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland. There, she developed an affinity for fibre and other found materials, creating extraordinary and idiosyncratic objects - fastidiously assembled structures that radically challenge our attempts to define them as sculpture. In addition to illustrations of more than forty essential works, this volume includes a number of essays that trace Scott's artistic development and her place within the field of contemporary art as a whole. A previously unpublished interview with Scott's twin sister, Joyce, tells the story of how Judith's move from relative isolation to a supportive and nurturing environment allowed an unexpected and extraordinary talent to emerge and flourish.(https://www.amazon.co.uk/Judith-Scott-Unbound-Catherine-Morris/dp/3791353845)

"Intimate Distance' is the first comprehensive monograph charting the career of acclaimed American photographer Todd Hido. Though he has published many smaller monographs of individual bodies of work, this gathers his most iconic images for the first time and brings a fresh perspective to his oeuvre with the inclusion of many unpublished photographs. Well-known for his photographs of landscapes and suburban housing across the United States, and for his use of luminous color, Hido casts a distinctly cinematic eye across all that he photographs, digging deep into his memory and imagination for inspiration. David Campany introduces the work and looks specifically at Hido's cinematic influences and the kind of spectatorship the work demands. The book is organized chronologically, showing how his series overlap in exciting, new ways. Also featured are short interviews with Hido about the making of each of his monographs. From exterior to interior, surface observations to subconscious investigations, landscapes to nudes, this mid-career survey reveals insight into Hido?s practice and illustrates how his unique focus has developed and shifted over time."
